Eliot Spitzer hooker trial coming to a close

Federal prosecutors are slowly tying up loose ends in the Eliot Spitzer call-girl case. In the latest development, Mark Brener admitted in Manhattan federal court that he led the prostitution ring that ultimately led to Spitzer’s downfall as New York governor.

Meanwhile, the Spitzer family is off on vacation to Southeast Asia,. The disgraced former governor leaves June 23, with his wife, Silda, and their three girls will be at his side, New York magazine reports. The trip was reportedly Spitzer's oldest daughter Elyssa's idea, and the whole clan will spend at least 10 days in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, sources say.

It may be Spitzer’s last vacation while not under indictment. The 62-year-old Brener pleaded guilty to running the Emperors Club, an Internet call-girl business, and to money laundering through two fraudulent companies, QAT Consulting and QAT International. Under the plea deal, he faces up to 30 months in prison, a sentence that suggests the feds are playing hardball. He had no previous convictions. With his plea, Spitzer and Dupre are the only others involved in the scandal who have not been charged and prosecuted. Spitzer could face money laundering and prostitution charges.

Cecil Suwal, 23, the elderly Brener’s girlfriend and the money manager behind Emperors Club, pled guilty earlier this month and will serve up to 27 months in prison. Federal investigators arrested Brener and Suwal at their New Jersey condo in early March. Less than a week later, authorities learned that Spitzer was a client who was involved in several trysts with a prostitute named "Kristen." He reportedly paid nearly $4,300 for the hooker, who turned out to be Dupre.

Since then, Dupre, 23, has been out of sight, and has not tried, or more likely has been prevented by the feds, from capitalizing on her notoriety. But recently, she has been spotted out in public and even made an outing to a New Jersey beach with her mother. Her MySpace post is her first full communication through the site since her arrest.
